Puppies, 4 week old poodle
It has been a few years since I have had a dog have puppies and I want to know when the puppy starts eating and drinking on their own? Does the mother do it or do I have to put them by a dish of water or soft puppy food also have a 7 year old female who likes to nip back of legs as people as they leave she does not dot me or my husband! I got her last July and I was not told that she did that and the person says they didnt have that problem. Can someone help me out with either or both questions I have. Thank You! mpk30

What breed is your nipper? That sounds like heel-nipping behavior common to some herding breeds.

Before anyone gets up to leave your home, put your nipper on a leash. If she makes any attempt to approach the person leaving, call her back to you immediately, reinforcing the command with a sharp tug of the leash, if necessary. Keep kibble or small dog treats in your pocket at all times, and as soon as the dog returns to your side, give her a treat and tell her what a good girl she is. It won’t be long before she is automatically returning to your side every time someone gets up to leave your home.

All the best,

Tempest

My nipper is a female poodle the mother of the puppy and she was that way b4 she was pregnant and had her puppies.

Well, she may not be a herder by breeding, but it seems she’s still trying to herd intruders out of her house. Try the technique I described in my first response and see if it’ll eliminate the nipping behavior. Consistency is the key to success in any behavior modification training.

Good luck,

Tempest
