Lab Dog Smell
We have a black lab about 7 months old. Great dog, very sweet but she has this terrible odor that gets all over the furniture, coats, anything she has contact with. We bathe her every week, bought doggy perfume, I spray the furniture, have even put baking soda on her! What is causing this? Even after the bath she smells. and it is terrible. She is in good health and eats Alpo. We do feed her treats that are for dogs and very rarely she receives a human treat. cicy33

i had a problem with the smell of my dog and consulted my vet he told me to wash her with lemon joy….which it helps with the fleas to…. and alpo has additive that extracts in your dogs hair… i would consult your vet to!!! dora

so it is possible that the dog food I am using is the culprit? I will also buy some joy and use that. thanks for the reply. we don’t have a vet, my mil gives her the shots she needs. cicy33

Has your vet run a blood panel on her to make sure all her values are within normal ranges? If not, you might consider having that done. Has your vet done a thorough examination of her mouth, teeth, and gums?

Switching her to a premium food like Nutro might help considerably, as well.

Very hard smell to describe just bad. It seems to attach to everything! I had a black lab before and did not have this problem, we fed him pedigree. I have switched her to purina one for puppies but so far not much difference. The lemon joy is better briefly. She is in great health, no other problems that we can see. very active. cicy33

my lab gets water in his ears when bathed and it stays there do to the low flow in the ears do to floppy ears i have gotten some meds from the vet and put them in after each bath if the smell returns i continue to use it till the smell is gone debra_hayes

Debra makes a very good point. Ear infections really stink. If your lab’s odor is emanating from her ears, it’s very likely she has an ear infection. If left untreated, such infections can result in the rupture of one or both eardrums and may even eventually lead to deafness. Frequent bathing will only make ear infections worse, never allowing the ear canal to dry out properly.

If your dog does have an ear infection, you will need to find a vet to treat her.

No, the smell comes from every inch of her. Though the kids did say her ears smelled like poop the other day so I will have to check that out! I do notice that the Joy at least temporarily lowers the smell. cicy33

we bought her one of those cedar filled pillows for her cage. So I can’t wash it but it never appears to smell? very strange! her blankets that we used to use did. and she loves the pillow. it is bigger than she is. she sleeps in there at night and during the day while we are at work and before anyone gets upset; the cage is large enough for her to stand in and is longer than she is. It is HUGE. We try now and then to leave her out which is what I want but she chews everything in sight and creates a few things we didn’t think of. One day I left her out and she got a hold of a sealed bowl with tubes of icing in it (for my daughters easy bake) got the lid off and ate the icing. and smeared it all over my carpet. She has chewed my spatulas (sp). And that was when the kids were up before I was and let her out of the cage but they didn’t pay attention to her. cicy33

Just wanted to let you know that we switched to Purina One for puppies and also started washing with joy. The smell is almost totally gone!!!! I believe it is the dog food cuz we have only washed her once or twice since then. It took a couple of days but it is so much better. I did a fair amount of research when i read here that alpo is a not so good a food. Apparently the cheaper the food, the more crap in it. literally! She loves the purina one, we get the one with lamb. Anyways, just wanted to say thank you to the replies and for the help in being able to enjoy my dog more! THANK YOU!!!
They are very hyper but very lovable. easily trained actually. just takes repetitive work. will defiinitely think about the washing thing. thanks for the tip. cicy33

Most of the time it’s not the price but the ingredients that make a difference. I have been feeding all my dogs maxiuum dog food from walmart it compares to purina one meat is the first ingredent. I have noticed a difference in thier coats since starting to use it. Other people have even commented on how shiny my lad is now and the puppy i recently adopted went to visit the shelter he came from and they commented on his coat he’s been on it since NOV. Wishing you many great times with your lab debra_hayes
